What are the symptoms of SCID?
- Since SCID is a genetic disorder that harms the child’s immune system, there are no specific symptoms that parents should be looking for because when the child is first born, they look normal. It is hard to tell whether the child has SCID without testing until he or she gets an infection. Because of this, early diagnosis with newborn screening is very crucial. Infections and sicknesses are easy to catch with a weak immune system. If parents observe that their child is constantly getting sick and cannot easily get over the illness, they should seek medical attention so they can test if their child has SCID with blood tests.
- Symptoms of SCID can show up within a week or up to several months after birth.
- Common sicknesses that children with SCID have are pneumonia, meningitis, chronic diarrhea, ear infections, and thrush infections.
